OpenAI’s ChatGPT Creator Claims AI Can Successfully Moderate Content

ChatGPT creator OpenAI defended the use of AI for content moderation, saying it could unlock efficiencies for social media companies by speeding up the time it takes to complete some tedious tasks.

Despite the hype surrounding generative AI, companies like Microsoft and Google-owned Alphabet have yet to monetize the technology they’ve pumped billions of dollars into, hoping it will have a big impact across industries.

Microsoft-backed OpenAI said its latest GPT-4 AI model can cut the content moderation process from a few hours to months and ensure more consistent tagging.

Content moderation can be a grueling task for social media companies like Facebook parent Meta, which works with thousands of moderators around the world to prevent users from seeing harmful content such as child pornography and images of extreme violence.

“The process (of content moderation) is inherently slow and can cause mental stress for human moderators,” OpenAI said. “With this system, the process of developing and customizing content policies is reduced from months to hours.”

Separately, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said Tuesday that the startup does not train its AI models on user-generated data.
